Gmail
Gmail’s huge success owes itself in large part to the wide range of applications, browser add-ons, styles, scripts and bookmarklets that work with it. From the get-go Google’s stayed out of developers’ way and turned a blind eye to unofficial Gmail add-ons, even ones that may very well violate its terms of service. Smart move: Google’s high tolerance for third-party apps have only helped Gmail win the hearts of power users and tweakers everywhere. To celebrate, today we’ve got our top 10 list of unauthorized and unofficial but hella-useful apps that make Gmail that much better. More here.

Google Launches Open Source Project Hosting

Yesterday Google launched “Google Code,” which is a place where developers can host current open source web projects. this is similar to the existing sourceforge, only run by Google.

The actual page of Google’s project can be found here.

The service is still new and still very very simple, but with time more features are expected. Expect more details on Google Code in the near future.

Google Tests New Ad Format

Saturday, May 20th, 2006

Fascinating, I know. But it gets even more intense, behold, I have a screenshot!

I know your heart is just quivering with excitement. Google Ads. Wow!

Anyway, there is a little story behind it I suppose. I was refreshing some of my pages as I was messing with the ad coloration and position, and I came across this one and took a screenshot. It only appeared once out of about 25 attempts. I’m not a premium Google publisher, so the only real thing I can think of is that they’re experimenting with a new format adjustment.

Nothing major. Not life-altering news, but I thought it was interesting. It seems like a type of ad that would, as intended, compel the viewer to “change to ads about” whatever topic, as you can see on the right side of the above image. Personally, I prefer this format and think it’d be much more successful in generating clicks.

Fascinating, I know.

Google Romance

Saturday, April 1st, 2006

Today, April 1st, Google announced it’s new service, Google Romance. Think it is a hoax?

Google Romance (Beta) is a place where you can post all types of romantic information and, using our Soulmate Search(TM), get back search results that could, in theory, include the love of your life. Then we’ll send you both on a Contextual DateTM, which we’ll pay for while delivering to you relevant ads that we and our advertising partners think will help produce the dating results you’re looking for.

The small little system give you options such as Take a Tour
, Press Release, and FAQ, much like many of their other services. They have a somewhat detailed tour of their service, but when one goes to sign up or upload content, it makes fun at you and blatantly states that it is, indeed, an April fools joke.I think Google’s intend on this, other than to simply have a fun little April fools joke, was to be convincing with it to a certain extent. They are so rapidly shooting out new services that for many people, this would come as no surprise. There is Yahoo! Personals, which is really a related, similar service, so I also speculate that they were indirectly making a joke on Yahoo!. Maybe they were, maybe not. We may never know.

This is not the first time Google has pulled such a prank. They did so before in their things such as Google Gulp or Google Copernicus Center or Google’s patented PigeonRank or Google’s MentalPlex. Just a fun April Fool’s Day webpage.Have fun! Â
